Gerrit Rietveld was a Dutch furniture designer and architect.
He is one of the principal members of the Dutch artistic movement. Rietveld is famous for his Red and Blue Chair designed in 1918 and for the Rietveld Schröder House build in 1924, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
My personal favorite is his Zig-Zag-chair, designed by him in 1934. I love minimalism and furniture that you can put in any corner of your house and still bring that modern vibe. This 1934 design is an expression of the ‘De Stijl’. For the people who don’t know, ‘De Stijl‘ a.k.a. “The Style” was founded in 1917, and Gerrit Rietveld was one of the principal members of the movement. The movement proposed ultimate simplicity and abstraction through which the artists could express their idea of harmony and order. This was established through a reduction of elements to pure geometric forms and primary colors. The Zig-Zag chair is made of natural cherry wood and can serve as a side table too.
Rietveld had his first retrospective exhibition devoted to his architectural work at the Centraal Museum, Utrecht in 1958.
